High Lymphocytes Need To Be Addressed Carefully

High lymphocytes indicate that there is something abnormal in the body. This condition is often temporary and not dangerous. However, that does not mean this can be underestimated, in certain conditions high lymphocytes can also indicate a more serious condition. High lymphocytes are generally a sign of infection, including those caused by viruses or bacteria. Further examination is needed by the doctor to determine the cause of high lymphocytes, due to other causes such as inflammation and the influence of certain substances.

What is Lymphocytes?

Lymphocytes are part of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow. Later lymphocytes and other white blood cells will together function as part of the immune system for the body's defense, which is to fight bacteria, viruses, and poisons that enter the body, so you avoid pain. In its journey, some lymphocytes will move towards the bloodstream, some are going to important body organs through the lymphatic system, such as lymph nodes, spleen, and tonsils. Lymphocytes are divided into two, namely B cells and T cells. B cell lymphocytes have the function of producing antibodies to attack bacteria, viruses, and poisons. While T cells are able to attack body cells that have been contaminated by viruses or cancer cells. That is why, B cells and T cells cannot be separated and work together against the causes of disease. Both of these cell types exist as effector cells and memory cells. Effector cells will be active due to the presence of an infectious cause and have a function to fight infection. Meanwhile, memory cells have the ability to remember the cause of infection that has existed before, so they can immediately respond to resistance when re-infected.

Possible Causes of High Lymphocytes

In adults, high lymphocyte levels are more than 4,000 per microliter. In children, normal levels vary, depending on age. Usually the normal limit for lymphocytes in children is 9,000 per microliter. More than that already entered into the category of high lymphocytes. Although the condition of high lymphocytes is not always dangerous, you must be vigilant. Because, not infrequently high lymphocytes are a sign that you have a serious illness. High or low levels of lymphocytes can be determined by conducting a blood test. This test is simple. The doctor will take your blood from the arm, then send the blood to the laboratory. There are a number of things that can affect the body that might make changes to the number of lymphocytes:
  • Had had an infection a while ago
  • Are having a heavy mind burden / stress
  • Is pregnant
  • Just had surgery
  • History of radiation therapy, corticosteroid therapy or chemotherapy.
If you experience any of the above conditions, it is advisable to convey it to the doctor before the examination is done. In addition, there are some more serious conditions that are known to cause an increase in lymphocyte counts to a higher level than usual:
  • Diseases caused by viral infections, namely the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), and hepatitis.
  • Diseases caused by bacteria, namely tuberculosis (TB) and pertussis.
  • Cancer, such as blood cancer or leukemia.
High lymphocytes generally do not display typical symptoms. Symptoms of high lymphocytes can vary, including fever, bruising or rash on the skin, weight loss or fatigue. Do not consider trivial, if these symptoms appear. Immediately see a doctor.
